All about the Stok Kangri Trek via Shang Valley.

About the Trek:

The most appealing trek to add to your skill at 20000 ft the Stok Kangri trek stands taller than some of the highest mountains of the world. No doubt it draws so much attention and trekkers both who want to test their mountaineering skills with yet another challenge. A short drive from Leh and you are in Stok village which lies at the southern part of Leh, from where you practically start trekking on Stok Kangri expedition. Here you will find local attractions like museums palace and places of worship on the way. From Stok village, around 4 hours of walk along the 5 km scenic route along the Himalayas will take you to Chang Ma. You cross small streams and diverse terrain from green to grey and spot mountain goats, that are used to the tough life.

Another 3 hrs of walk from Chang Ma on barren and rugged terrain brings you to Mankorma Camp. This place is just 4 hours from base camp of Stok Kangri expedition. Once you reach the base camp, you can spot ice capped grey mountains as far as your eyes can see. You can also spot peaks of Golep Kangri and Parcha Kangri. After you are acclimatized to the thinning air and lower air pressure, the trek to the summit begins, and of course enjoy one of the rarest sights of your life and nature at its mightiest show.

One thing that requires attention is Stok Kangri trek height, that involves a difficult 7 km climb from the base camp and then return after summit. After passing through the glacier you have to cross a steep ridge which takes 7 to 8 hours. One you reach atop Stok Kangri you are awarded with breath-taking 360 degrees view of the Karakoram and Zanskar ranges. The Stok Kangri trek cost is a bit higher than other usual weekend treks, owing to the technicalities involved in the trek. The trek requires a great level of physical fitness and ability to deal with mountain sickness, nausea or headaches caused by the ratified air and dropping pressure. You need a good 10 to 12 days to complete the trek and physical and mental endurance to ascent the fairly technical steep ascent.
If you are planning this trek then you must know Stok Kangri best season is from June to September, excluding the monsoon in between. For those who are willing to attempt the Stok Kangri trek in April, should check for the trail conditions as it is mostly covered with snow making your climb difficult.
